Hurricane Sandy, You Will NOT Be Missed. Hope Everyone Is Well.

Hello all!
Checking in and letting everyone know that our posts will continue as they have been before the power outages, gas crisis and mass hysteria Sandy caused.  We hope that EVERYONE who was, or was not, affected by the storm is safe, healthy and well.
With power still out in some places, and people at each other’s throats for gas, we can thank Sandy for another October crisis.  BUT, keep in mind that if you are without power or gas, you still have your health and family.  Starting tomorrow TDR will be posting information relevant and interesting to the surrounding area, but as of today, we are happy to be up and running.

Thank you to everyone reading this, and we wish everyone well.
We hope to hear from you soon.

TDR.

Essex County, Are You Ready For “Frankenstorm”?!

As many of us may, or may not, know there is a massive storm named Hurricane Sandy headed our way.  The category 1 storm (large and dangerous) is set to hit ground near us by “Tuesday around 8 a.m.” (10/30/12)

“Sandy’s landfall is predicted to be somewhere in southern New Jersey on Tuesday around 8 a.m.”

Image

In an interview with New York’s Mayor Michael Bloomberg, he is quoted in saying:

“I think it’s fair to say we don’t know when or if or where the storm’s going to hit,” New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said at a press conference Thursday. “The forecasters say it could be dangerous, but I think a word that they’ve been using most is it’s unpredictable.”

This information is invaluable to us in Essex County as well, as we are so close to NYC.
The storm its self is predicted to bring snow as well. . .we all remember last year’s Halloween.  We’ll see how this one is going to be!

Music, Performance, Literature, Entertainment. . .ALL Things That Bloomfield, New Jersey, Have Been Known For!!

Being in Bloomfield has really opened my eyes to many things.  I have touched upon educational, cultural and economic strong points in my blogs in the past.  This time its all about the Entertainment!

Image

Bloomfield has a rich history of Orchestral and Band music dating back to May 8th, 1987!!  With a multitude of historical concerts, including playing on the New Jersey Pavilion at the 1960 WORLDS FAIR in New York, the bands and orchestras of Bloomfield have a rich background and culture.

Image

Interested in playing in a Mandolin Orchestra?  Well, Bloomfield even has an outlet for that!  Founded in 1945, the Bloomfield Mandolin Orchestra is going strong today and practices 7:30 – 9:30 pm on Tuesdays and welcome any new members interested!

Image

Youth bands, Mandolin Orchestras, Vocal Ensembles and even Drama Theater are all parts of the rich culture that Bloomfield has to offer its residents, and anyone else who wants to join in!  Always welcoming, always warm, these groups are to die for.

When you have a chance, go see them! OR, Join them!

Ultimately, I have a strong sense of pride when culture, music, performance and literature all meet  and combine to create something as special as what I see here in Bloomfield.  It is hard to find such a rich and developed program for these topics in many other places.

Beautiful, Respectful and Genuine.  Bloomfield, New Jersey!

Ever Wonder Why There Is So Much Air In Your Bag Of Chips? Here Is The Answer!

We’ve all fallen victim to paying for a bag of potato chips, expecting there to be much more inside than there actually is.  The general idea on the Chip companies putting so much “air” into the bags is so that they can get the revenue, with less product.  Apparently this is not the case.

Image

A recent article in Reader’s Digest tells the reason.  “They’re filled with Nitrogen.  Oxygen would quickly turn the chips rancid.  Nitrogen preserves the freshness of the chips, prevents combustion, and creates sufficient cushioning during shipping so the chips don’t get crushed.” (Reader’s Digest)

Image

Upon reading this I, myself, along with the rest of the TDR members were stunned.
How could this be?  Chip companies are not just trying to get away with “gypping” us?  Amazing!

Knowing this little tid-bit of information, as a consumer of potato chips, makes me feel better about spending my money on these. . .incredibly tasty snacks!  I hope this information makes you feel better about it too!

Remember Cinema 23 In Cedar Grove? It’s Becoming Something New Finally!

Remember that old cinema in Cedar Grove?  The one across from the Pilgrim diner, and next to the Pilgrim Shopping center on Pompton Avenue?  Well, if you do, you probably know that it has been closed down for almost three (3) years now.

With the cinema just sitting here, vacant, next to a lone standing (since the cinema closed) restaurant, Cedar Grove‘s Planning Board finally decided something must be done.

The plan that is in progress for this old classic of a theater is one that many probably would not guess.  The board is planning on turning Cinema 23 into 5 RETAIL OFFICES!  The planning for this renovation has been approved.

As former patrons of the theater ourselves, we decided to share this information with the public that may, or may not have, known about this already.
